Internship Review

For 10 weeks over summer 2018 I undertook a marketing internship with HandMade Theatre. During this time I had the opportunity to see HandMade perform at Gloworm Festival at Thorsby, see (and help) their new studio transform into a welcoming and homely environment and attend the Family Open Day at the beginning of October.

After finishing university in May the opportunity to intern at HandMade was the perfect chance to ensure I had a productive summer and also allowed me to use some of the skills I’d honed over the past 3 years. As an English Language graduate with a love of writing this internship couldn’t have been better!

It was exciting to explore the behind the scenes of a creative company and see just how different each day is. The responsibilities ranged widely allowing me to develop skills in multiple areas! My main duties throughout this experience have been; acting as the head of social media, posting about shows and festivals, emailing schools and press about shows, writing blog posts about festival performances and upcoming shows, reviewing performances, helping set up and dismantle sets and getting the studio ready (cleaning, building flat pack furniture, general organisation) for the Family Open Day. This experience has been fun, rewarding and extremely worthwhile. Not only have I strengthened my already existing skills, I’ve been able to develop more!

I think that my favourite part was partaking in the transformation of the studio ready for the big reveal at the Family Open Day. Seeing how the team’s work had come together for the event really was fantastic and made me extremely proud! I’ve enjoyed my time with the team immensely and cannot thank Amy and Suzy enough. They have been so lovely and accommodating, and ready to help me whenever I needed a hand. I’m excited to see what the future hold for HandMade and I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for any future shows near me!
